Kate Upton Upstages Mercedes in Super Bowl Teaser

When car companies tap celebrities to help promote their latest vehicles they have to weigh the potential marketing benefits against the danger that people will find the pitch person more appealing — or at least more memorable – than the car.

The latter appears to be happening to Mercedes-Benz, based on the online buzz. Ever since the luxury car maker released a teaser of its Super Bowl commercial featuring the model Kate Upton, more people are talking about Upton than about Mercedes.

According to data from Kontera Technologies Inc., a content-marketing and research company, Mercedes is trending about 5.5% lower since launching the campaign for its coming CLA compact sedan. Upton, however is generating  20% more online buzz than she was before the ad began airing. So, while people may be talking about the ad, they’re not talking about the product, Kontera said.
